1994 · Escondido · Functional playground: adobe water troughs, climbing branch structures, brick, stone slide

This work has since been removed.

This functional playground located in Escondido, California, is also an exploration of local history and its connection to the land. The general layout incorporates entryways along the cardinal points of the compass and includes references to local Grape Day festivities. Many of the bricks are made by local schoolchildren.

The hand-pumped water flows along adobe troughs which suggest the importance of aqueducts in the formation of the town, a creek which once passed through the park, and local agricultural traditions. Climbing branch structures make use of trees lost in a recent fire and allude to the local Luiseño culture. Finally a stone slide with the repeating words “home is everywhere you look” at the summit complete this environment.
